Now that summer’s here, it can only mean one thing for some of you – vacation! Normally, vacations are a time to just relax and forget about all of your worries. Unfortunately, when you have braces, your orthodontics will require constant care that just can’t simply be ignored, even when you’re on vacation and your regular schedule’s a mess. Thankfully, as your Southlake and Bedford orthodontist and team, we’ll always be here for you and ready to help you out in circumstances like this. We’d like to give you a few tips on how to best take care of your braces while you’re on vacation.
Take a travel kit with you
The most vital thing you can do to take care of your braces while on vacation is to bring a travel kit. This travel kit should contain all of your dental supplies, in addition to anything needed for your orthodontics. We recommend that your travel kit include:
- A travel-sized toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Floss
- Additional elastics or rubber bands
- Orthodontic wax
- A compact mirror
By bringing this travel kit with you, you’ll be prepared for anything when it comes to your dental and orthodontic needs. Whether you run into minor orthodontic problems with your braces or need to clean your teeth after a meal, this kit will have everything you need.
Keep avoiding problematic foods
As our patients with braces undoubtedly know – many foods can be problematic for someone with braces. Hard foods can potentially break brackets and wires. Sticky foods can get stuck in braces and loosen them or pull them apart. We’re confident that you already know this and that you’ve developed a regular diet based on those facts. However, when you’re going on a vacation, your eating habits are likely going to be heavily altered. You won’t be able to adhere to the regular eating regimen that you’re used to. Worse yet, typically on vacations, there are plenty of delicious-looking foods available that may be harmful to your braces. Even though many foods may be tempting during your vacation, we want you to keep up the good work in refraining from foods that can damage your braces. Trust us – potentially breaking your braces isn’t worth it!
